Update: Xbox series X is now in stock at Smyths Toys and Curries. Read on for more details.

The Xbox Series X is over a year old, but a global component shortage coupled with supply chain bottlenecks have left Microsoft’s next-gen console out of stock since its launch in 2020.

In December, many UK retailers handed out thousands of stocked consoles to cheering Christmas shoppers, but after the holidays the Xbox Series X is sold out online again.

When new consoles appear in stock, it’s usually without warning and sells out within minutes, as customers with quick fingers grab hold of available units as they arrive. That’s why we launched our Xbox Series X Inventory Tracking Live Blog, where we follow all UK retailers at once to bring you instant stock alerts. That way, you have a chance of getting yourself a console before it sells out again.

We’ll also bring you tips and advice on beating the crowds to pack an Xbox Series X, including sites to watch out for, where the Xbox might be restocked next, and how to register your interest in new consoles before they go on sale. .

Can you buy the Xbox Series X at CEX?

We do not track the availability of the Xbox Series X on auction sites or at bright red second-hand electronics stores.

Since their launch in 2020, PlayStation and Xbox have become the focus of scalpers – professional resellers who use automated robots to buy all the available stock before everyone else, only to resell the console at inflated prices to any buyer willing to pay more. The mismatch between supply and demand means that CEX currently sells used Xbox consoles for more than they cost new.

It’s up to you to decide whether you want to buy the Xbox from a reseller, but buying a console in this way further encourages scalping, prolongs the Xbox shortage, and drives up the price of the console for those who buy it. legitimate buyers. We will have no part in this shady carry-on baggage.

Is the Xbox Series S worth it?

The Xbox S series (£ 249, is considered a brilliant gaming machine capable of playing the same next-gen games as the Xbox X series.

The console is backwards compatible with older Xbox games and comes with cheaper hardware, which means some of the more sophisticated graphics options are reduced. You still get faster load times and a huge performance improvement over the Xbox One.

It also doesn’t have a disc drive, so you can only play downloaded games. The hard drive is also half the size, so you have to re-download games more often.

Yes, but consoles are currently as hard to find in stores as they are online. Your best bet is to try your local Smyths Toys branch, as the retailer’s site is reporting a bunch of inventory available to click and collect today. But these in-store restockings are often very low and sell out quickly, usually within hours.

Game stores each have a Twitter account, which they use to promote the arrival of Xbox stock. This Twitter list is a great way to keep tabs on all of Game Store’s Twitter accounts. Meanwhile, Smyths’ website has a tool to check stock levels of consoles at all of its stores in the UK.

The Currys SSD pack

You can also buy the Xbox Series X as part of a bundle (£ 659, containing the Seagate 1TB expansion hard drive. We have seen the expansion drive sell for around £ 190. in the past, so it’s close to what you would pay if you had to buy the two products separately.

Of the two Xbox Series X packs available from Currys this morning, we think that with the extra hard drive is the best value option here, if you can afford it. Xbox capacity expansion gives you more space for downloads, and these sophisticated modern games are taking up more and more space.
