Xbox Game Pass loses one of the best roguelikes of recent years

0

The latest batch of games to Xbox Games Pass has been revealed, along with the list of titles leaving the subscription service later this month.

Chief among the soon-to-be-disappearing Xbox Game Pass games is Hades. The Greek roguelite caused a stir when it was released in 2018 and made its way onto our list of the best roguelike games. This puts you in the shoes of Zagreus as he tries to escape the procedurally generated dungeons of the underworld. The game’s hack ‘n’ slash combat system garnered much praise, as did its clever characterization and illustrations of various Greek gods.

Nine other games will also be dropped by the end of the month, including space sim Elite Dangerous, classic point-and-click adventure Myst and acclaimed indie tale What Remains of Edith Finch. The latter only takes a couple of hours and is worth taking a closer look at if you have some free time before the end of the month.

In a blog post (opens in a new tab), Microsoft says Two Point Hospital also gets the boot. This is sad news for anyone who has found that Two Point Campus doesn’t quite offer the same chaotic fun as its predecessor.

A handful of new games have come to take their place. One of them includes another Greek-inspired adventure. Immortals Fenyx Rising will be the next latest Ubisoft game to be added to Game Pass, following the publisher’s partnership with Microsoft earlier this year. It’s sort of an over-the-top version of Breath of the Wild.

The arrival of Fenyx Rising follows Assassin’s Creed Origins, Watch Dogs 2 and Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

Fenyx Rising will be joined by turn-based tactics game Commandos 3, hacking puzzler Exapunks, and upcoming interactive movie Immortality. Here are all the new games coming to Game Pass later this month.

  • Coffee talk (Cloud, Console and PC) – available now
  • Midnight Fight Express (Cloud, Console, and PC) – August 23
  • Exapunks (PC) – August 25
  • Opus: Echo of Starsong – Full Bloom Edition (Console and PC) – August 25
  • Commandos 3 – HD Remaster (Cloud, Console, and PC) – August 30
  • Immortality (Cloud, PC, Xbox Series X|S) – August 30
  • Immortals Fenyx Rising (Cloud, Console, and PC) – August 30
  • Tinykin (Console and PC) – August 30

Xbox Cloud Gaming also received a big update. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can now access 16 additional games through the streaming service, including Dragon Age: Origins, Star Wars: Squadrons, Chorus, and TMNT Shredder’s Revenge.

On top of that, there’s the selection of new games announced earlier this month. Game Pass subscribers might be bummed that they can’t fill Zagreus’ shoes any longer, but they’re sure to be playing games.
