A little over a year ago, Microsoft announced that it would end the Open License program (also known as Open Business) at the end of 2021. That was big news at the time. because the Open License program had been around for over 20 years and was Microsoft’s most processed volume licensing program for SMB customers.
The move is Microsoft’s first step toward transitioning customers from their traditional volume licensing programs (such as Open License, Open Value, Select +, MPSA, and Enterprise) to the more streamlined purchasing model as part of Microsoft customer agreement and processed through the cloud solution. Provider Program (CSP) on the New Commerce Experience billing platform.
What does this mean for customers?
Instead of customers having to purchase through a range of different volume licensing programs with their different eligibility terms, commitments, and individual agreements that need to be set up, maintained, and renewed, the Microsoft Customer Agreement is instead a single digital agreement that simplifies the customer’s purchase. Whether the customer is acquiring their partner’s products and services through the CSP program, through Microsoft online directly, or through a Microsoft sales representative (in the case of large enterprises).
In the 12 months since this announcement, we have assisted our reseller partners in their transition from the Open License program to CSP. The process went very well with excellent feedback from our partners. Many of our partners have been doing Microsoft 365 transactions and other subscriptions through our CSP portal for quite some time now and when they realized that they can now complete perpetual software license transactions using the same method, this turned out to be good news.
What are my options if I haven’t made the transition yet?
If you are not already transacting Perpetual CSP software through our CSP Portal, I’m sure you will really appreciate the ease and speed with which Perpetual CSP transactions can be completed, it’s as easy as provisioning M365 subscriptions. Once the customer’s tenant is associated with our CSP portal, you can have a perpetual software license delivered and accessible to the customer in their M365 admin center within minutes. Compare this with the Open License program ordering process which can take 24-72 hours to access the software in the VLSC (not to mention issues related to VLSC access, permissions, tracking licenses, etc.) .
Now that we are rapidly approaching the end of 2021, what options will you have for purchasing perpetual software for your SMB customers that you have so far handled through the open license program?
Let’s take a look at the options that will be available from 2022:
Your customer wants to purchase new perpetual licenses without Software Assurance
You will need to process these perpetual licenses without Software Assurance through the CSP program.
Your customer wants to purchase new perpetual licenses with Software Assurance
The customer can purchase these licenses under the Open Value program, a three-year contract including Software Assurance. The customer can either pay in full in advance or spread the payments annually over the three-year period.
Your customer had previously purchased licenses with Software Assurance under the Open License program and Software Assurance is due for renewal in 2022 or 2023.
When Software Assurance needs to be renewed, it can be renewed in the Open Value program where the customer can either pay for 3 years in full in advance or stagger payments annually over the three-year term.
If you are not already registered as an indirect CSP reseller, you should consider doing so as soon as possible so that you can continue to make software purchases for your customers without interruption after the Open License program ends. The CSP program not only gives you access to the full suite of cloud services such as Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365 and Azure, it now also includes server subscriptions and perpetual software allowing you to deliver a full suite of offerings to your customers. under a single, simplified purchasing model with self-service procurement through our CSP portal.
